Jill Scott is the only child from her mom Joyce Scott. She was born in Philadelphia the state of Pennsylvania on April 4, 1972. The family was also dominated by her grandmother and grew up as an only child. Scott went to the Philadelphia High School for Girls, and then Temple University after graduating. At Temple University, Scott had at two different jobs while taking classes in secondary education. She hoped to become a high-school English teacher. The dream, however ended up being a short-lived dream when she quit college after three year of study and became an aide to teachers. After starting her career performing at live poetry performances She eventually joined forces with Amir Quest Thompson of The Roots. You Got Me, their joint song, was written by the duo. During Roots' show she showed herself as an artist. She secured subsequent collaborations with Eric Benet Will Smith Common. While on the Canada tour of The Broadway musical Rent the Musical, she gained valuable performance experience. She was hired to Hidden Beach Recordings as their first signing artist.
